Louise Ellis has been a student
and practitioner of yoga for 38 years, and has been teaching for over 30. She started
out with the study of traditional hatha yoga, pranayama and philosophy under Swami Vishnudevanda
in 1971. Her background includes several diverse yoga traditions,
within which she has both practiced and taught. She maintains a dedicated daily
practice and continues to travel extensively in India both to study and
teach.
Louise began studying in Mysore with her Guru
Sri K.
Pattabhi Jois
in 1993, and is one of the few women to have been
certified
by
him to teach the Ashtanga Vinyasa system.
.
Her individualized approach to teaching centers
on the development of pratyahara and ease in daily practice, through the use of breath, dristhi
and an attitude of surrender and bhakti.
"No
matter which sequence you happen to be doing at a given time the important
thing is the quality of attention and sense of lightness you bring to it. It's
an art form to approach each days practice without expectation and with a sense
of perspective".
Based between the US
and India, Louise offers an ongoing Mysore program in Rishikesh, India, as well
as
international workshops and retreats. Upcoming events are
posted on the Classes & Retreats page of this
site.

Class formats generally offered are as follows:
Mysore Is
the traditional self paced teaching method generally used at the KPJAYI in Mysore,
India. Students practice at their own pace in silence and meditative
form, with individual
adjustment and guidance from the teacher. New poses are added as ability is
gained in the practice. All levels are welcome as each student is given an
individual practice, which will suit their ability and experience. To honor the
traditional rest days, Mysore classes are not given on Saturdays or
days of the full and new moons.
